Painting with
Lights and Words

The artist Philipp Geist and the GoDmother Hannelore Elsner

To put Philipp Geist's artisticwork into words is a challenge - though it is mainly composed of words. Using projectors and other technical means, Geist develops walk-in installations. He therewith enters into a unique dialogue with the architecture and its history. It excites him to redefine a place with his projections. In Frankfurt, Germany, this is the Frankfurt Cathedral where emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were once elected and crowned kings. "My background is painting and photography" says Geist. "In photography, however, I do not picture figurative things, it is rather some kind of painting with lights. In my installations, I would also call this painting, though I also still work a lot with fonts, with typography. Then again, I create pictures from words which cannot necessarily be read as a clear word but become an abstract painting in turn." What makes this project for the BMW Art Advent Calendar so special is the fact that a person is part of the installation: the German actress Hannelore Elsner. "I will work with words out of the Nativity story that Hannelore will be reading. Han- nelore will then immerse into the projection as the leading character. Into the words that are projected inside the cathedral and onto herself. The opportunity to work with an actress and to experience a conscious handling of the installation also makes quite a different component. As Hannelore is such a great and experienced actress, I am of course very excited to see the results. To me this is an experiment. Though I do know the projection, I do not know what it will look like in this place. I have an idea, of course, but the intuitive development of the installation on-site creates excitement - just like a con- versation, a dialogue with some place and then again with a person. For Hannelore, it is an experiment, too, one she has to get herself into. So this is very exciting for both of us." Logically, painting with light has to take place in the dark. It is nearly 10 pm when Philipp Geist turns on the three projectors. A computer helps him to control the visuals. Hannelore Elsner is in the stalls of the tremendous Cathedral - alone. With a firm and clear voice, she is reading the Nativity story. Words like Birth, Nazareth, God, Nativity, New Testament, Peace on Earth, Grace, Joy and Saviour float across the red brick walls and round arches of the more than 20 metres high arch. Coloured in orange, white and black, they overlap, join together and then separate again, become gigantic in size, shrink again and disappear. Orange lines and strokes appear - wandering, entangling and turning into a bright, nearly fluorescent blue. Geist records the projection with cameras - for the opening of the Art Advent Ca- lendar, he wants to project this installation onto the ultra-modern front of the Jumeirah Luxury hotel in the centre of Frankfurt, Germany, next to the myZeil shopping mall. Now Hannelore Elsner enters into dialogue with the illumination. She is wearing a purple evening gown. Again, Geist is sending words from the Nativity Story through the Cathedral. Hannelore walks down the aisle, barefoot, hesitantly at first, tentative. Like a seeker she twists and turns. Words running over her body. As she finds them, she extends her arms to let the words flow over her gown. Now she begins to run, to escape, then runs towards the words, embraces them, pauses, gazes at them. She completely dives into this other world, this Cathedral of words. Finally, she seeks for the creator of this world. "This is madness. I could could go crazy." She reaches for Philipp's hand to take him with her. Together, they are running up and down the aisle. Now he, too, is part of his work. Hannelore's son Dominik - a student of photography who has been accompanying his mother to events, readings and films with his camera for the purpose of study - documents everything. "It was Philipp who gave me this magical moments." Hannelore Elsner is completely enraptured. "I immersed and vanished." Philipp Geist is also impressed. "What I liked best was Hannelore's intuitive reactions, how she discovered everything, these were strong moments." "It is so meditative being in it" says the actress. "Everything around you is moving with you. It actually really makes you happy to be in it. I could jump around with joy." And again, she is gone - with the light. Born in Witten, Germany, in 1976, Philipp Geist is an in- ternationally recognised young artist acting with all facets of the media. His works range from videos to performance, photography and painting. In his multimedia projections, Geist focuses on moments of space, sound, light and motion picture. With the illumination of buildings, he shows the fleeding moments of beauty and the impressions between an artistic transfer of a meaning and the sensual experience. With the help of colours, lights and movements, Geist visu- ally obliterates architectures.
